Review: Bonaquin Gold Mask

These masks were sent to me by Zetafera only for review purpose. However, this is not a paid review.

(Wordings in Italics are direct quotes from wherever mentioned)

A while back, Zetafera kindly sent 2 of the Bonaquin Gold Masks to me for reviewing purpose.

What is it?
Bonaquin Gold Mask, four fold facial treatment - whitening, moisturizing, pore minimizing and oil control, a ground breaking gel form mask gold in colour.

Where is it made/does it come from?
This mask was originally produced for salon use in the South Korea.

What does it claim to do?
Gentle, but highly effective, 24K Gold Flakes/Collagen Mask penetrates quickly & deeply into the skin layers and boosts rejuvenation on the cellular level. Gold Collagen Mask delivers its nutrients deep below the skin, thereby fighting the underlying causes of facial wrinkles and aging skin. Not only does it help reduce the appearance of existing signs of aging, but also helps prevent future wrinkles from forming and restores a healthy, radiant complexion. (From Zetafera)

A ground breaking gel form mask. The Bonaquin Gold Mask is made from natural extracts and collagen which offers up to 10 times higher absorption rate than any other ordinary facial mask. The gold mask's ingredients naturally dissolve when it comes in contact with body temperature - enabling the skin to easier absorb its benefits  while leaving your face soft, hydrated and glowing. The Bonaquin Gold Mask minimizes the pores, tones and restores the skin's elasticity to unveil a youthful, luminous complexion. (From Bonaquin)

What is it made of?
WATER, PROPANEDIOL, GLYCEROL, PHYTO-COLLAGEN, SEAWEED POLYSACCHARIDES, VITAMIN-C, METHYL GLYCINE, ALLANTOIN, ROSE OIL, HYALURONIC ACID (HA), COENZYME Q10, GOLD POWDER, PHENOXYETHANOL. (From the packaging)

Where can I find/buy it?
If you're a Malaysian, you can find it at Zetafera's website (click here). I'm not sure if they ship internationally as it isn't mentioned in the website. Anyone living outside Malaysia who's interested, try the Bonaquin website (click here).

How much does it cost?
At Zetafera, it's RM 8.00 per mask. In the Bonaquin website, there's no pricing so I'm not sure how much it's selling at anywhere else.

What is it packaged in and how does the product look like?
The mask is laid flat, packed in an airtight plastic packaging. A hard piece of plastic is used inside to contain the mask and help keeping it flat. One side is transparent so the mask is visible from it. The mask itself is gold in colour, in gel-form with thickness of approximately 1-2mm.

How does it feel when/after using it?
Imagine putting cold jelly onto your skin, that's exactly how it will feel! My skin felt  soothed and comfortable and nothing significantly different after using it. No discomfort such as stickiness, oiliness, tightness or itchiness at all.

How should I use it?
Spread the mask evenly onto a clean, cleansed face. Leave it on for 30 minutes. I suggest lying down and taking a nap while doing so, will elaborate later. After 30 minutes, remove the mask and rinse the face with water and continue with your usual routine (toner, moisturizer etc). Note: In the website, it's stated "Do not use more than 2 hours". It is recommended to use this mask 2-3 times a week.

I'd like to first clarify that I was only given two sheets of the Bonaquin Gold Mask to try and clearly, with only two sheets it is pretty difficult for me to write a proper review on this product. Before giving my ratings on a product, I like to make sure that I use it long enough - usually, a minimum of one month - to actually judge it otherwise it's not fair whether my thoughts on the product is positive or negative. So for this review, I will not give ratings or whatsoever, these are more likely my initial thoughts on the masks.

For your reference, I have normal/combination skin. The areas around my nose and mouth gets slightly oily depending on the weather while everywhere else is usually normal. I don't break out very often these days (TOUCH WOOD) but I have hyperpigmention and a number of post-acne scarrings. I also have fairly large pores in my inner cheeks areas, close to my nose.

Result:

This is how my skin looked like before using the mask, after cleansing.

This is how it looked after using the mask for the first and second time.

This is a comparison between the very beginning before I started using the first mask, and after using my last sheet of mask.

A close up of some scars on my cheek, before using the mask and after. Sorry I forgot to lable them!

Like I said, I've only used this mask 2 times so result may be different if compared to people who use it regularly, AND result may not be obvious enough considering it's only two times of usage. I allowed a period of 2 days before I used my second sheet of mask. I'll just break it down to the things this mask claims to do:

Whitening - This, apart from everything else is the most apparent result I noticed. As you can tell from the picture, the scars on my cheeks are visibly less red after using the mask. I didn't notice it until I looked closely in that picture. As for overall complexion, I'd say it did reduce the redness of the face SLIGHTLY right after using it. This could possibly be the help of Hyaluronic Acid.

Moisturizing - Pretty decent. I didn't experience any dryness or oiliness after using it.

Pore minimizing - Didn't notice any difference unfortunately.

Oil Control - Again, nothing significantly changed since I've only used it two times. And besides, I only used it at night. I do use a night cream and in the morning I would always wake up with a thin layer of oil on the surface of my skin, it happens even when I used the mask so I'd say it didn't really change anything.

Other claims include:

Radiance - I did notice my skin glowing and looking more luminous after using it.

Combating wrinkles - I've never had very visible lines (TOUCH WOOD!) so I can't speak much for this but with the presence of Coenzyme Q10, I believe regular usage of this mask should help in anti-aging aspects.

Packaging:

The mask is laid flat so the whole product comes off looking and feeling rather huge if compared to the typical sheet masks out there - usually made of cloth and is able to be folded into a quarter its size.  I understand why this mask needs to be laid flat because you can't fold a sheet of gel can you? For that, I personally don't find this mask convenient especially when you need to travel because of the size. Other than that, this mask is contained in a plastic packaging, nothing fancy at all. Water - I believe its the 'essence' of the mask - accidentally leaked when I tried to take the mask out.

Overall, with the way this mask is packaged, I find that it takes more effort to handle. If you ask me to suggest a better way it should be packaged, I honestly can't give any idea only because the mask itself is in gel form so it does make sense to pack it that way.

Product:

If you can't tell already by looking at the picture above, this mask does not fit well at all. The cut outs for the eyes and mouth are obviously too small. I didn't feel very comfortable when I had it on because I couldn't open my eyes properly, and the mask is sitting directly on my upper lip - yuck. If you have very small lips or eyes, this may fit better.

Also, it doesn't cover the areas around my nose too much which is quite disappointing because that particular area on my face has the most/largest pores and gets oily most frequently.

This mask is in gel form and because of that, once it sits on your skin, it becomes very hard to move it around. A tiny bit more of pressure will tear the mask. Unlike cloth sheet masks, you can easily slide them around for a better fit. One time, I tried to adjust the lips area because I was feeling very uncomfortable that it sits on my upper lip. Alas, I tore a little bit of it accidentally at the sides of the lips cut out and I looked like The Joker.

One more thing; you MUST lie down when using this mask. I am the kind of person who likes to put on my mask - whether it's sheet, peel off, rinse off etc - and do anything BUT lying down and relax. So for me, it was kind of irritating when the mask kept sliding off my face when I was moving around doing my stuffs. And you know what happens when you adjust it - it tears.

Other than all that, it feels very nice and soothing when applied. Because it is in gel form along with the presence of Allantoin, it feels cold on the skin and eventually calms down any irritation or redness I presume.

Price:
This mask is selling at RM 8.00. I'm personally not a fan and not familiar of sheet masks out there so to me, I'd say this is pretty much an affordable and reasonable price considering it IS made of gold (Read list of ingredients - Gold powder)! But don't take my judgement too seriously, cos really, I don't use sheet masks at all (unless it's given to me for free, no harm trying) so I'm totally not familiar with its pricing in the market.

Conclusion:
This mask does live up to a few things it claims. The fact that it's made of gold powder and is gold in colour makes it unique. I certainly liked how it did help in lightening the scars and  reducing the redness. Also, it leaves my skin looking luminous. It didn't help much in reducing the size of my pores but I won't complain  because for RM 8.00, you can't expect it to work like magic. I didn't like how it didn't fit very well on my face and that I need to lie down when using it.

You should give this a try if...
You want to feel extra special using gold for your facial routine lol! I'd recommend this mask to people who needs something to even out the complexion, reducing the redness, lightly fade scars, and to sooth and calm their skin after a long day out.

You should NOT give this a try if...
... you absolutely hate it when a mask doesn't fit well on your face. Or if you're like me, you don't like to stay immobile when you put on a mask.

Ok the end! I hope this has been helpful!

hee hee. I too like doing something when I'm 'masking' but this one keeps falling off and I had to lie down. it sits on my upper lip and hardly covers my nose too!

I need to use the 2nd sheet before I can review it
